Discover How to Beat Foot & Ankle Pain
If you are suffering from Foot & Ankle Pain, then you will know that doing a lot of straightforward daily tasks is a challenge. You’ve probably had to slow down and stop doing some of the things you did before as the pain won’t let you do them. Does this sound familiar?
If you ignore it, it WON’T get better on its own.
If you try to manage it, you will make it WORSE.
Your daily life has changed. You can’t do the things that you were doing before. Your foot or ankle is hurting, stiff or sore. The pain might even be preventing you from sleeping at night or worse first thing in the morning.
Will resting your foot or ankle help ease the symptoms?
PROBABLY NOT!
Will avoiding those painful activities help? NO!
What you are feeling in your ankle or foot will probably get worse without the right sort of treatment. The soreness and pain won’t go away by themselves. Every time you try to stand up, drive, get out of bed or even walk, you’ll be reminded of your pain.
Foot and ankle pain can stop you from doing simple daily tasks. And some of our patients are actually making their condition worse by doing the wrong things. Activities such as walking, driving, standing up or even standing are painful and take more effort than they should. The persistent pain causes harm to your self-confidence and has a detrimental effect on your mental wellbeing. You end up becoming OVER cautious and eventually your foot or ankle becomes more painful and stiffer.
Foot and ankle pain can be difficult to live with. The questions we get asked most frequently are:
Why Am I In Constant Pain? Or Why Am I Still Suffering?
To help you get all the information in the same place, we’ve prepared a short report where you can learn about the different conditions that might affect your foot or ankle, such as Achilles Tendonitis, Plantar Fasciitis, Sprained Ankle and many more.
If you look on the internet, you can find all sorts of information about feet and ankles. But it can be confusing as you don’t know what to believe and which bits apply to you. And that’s the problem that many people who come to see us at the Relive Physiotherapy Clinic in Chester to talk about their foot or ankles injuries have. Either that, or a well-meaning family member has given some advice, such as ‘you’ll feel better with a bit of rest’, ‘give it a few days and see if it hasn’t got better’ or ‘go and see the GP to get some painkillers’, which although well-intentioned does not have any impact whatsoever on your recovery. In fact, the pain might even be worse than it was in the beginning. The advice you received hasn’t helped you – the pain has gone thanks to the painkillers, but as soon as you stop taking them, it comes back. The rest might have been nice, but your foot or ankle still hurt. And because you’ve been inactive for a while and taking painkillers which mask your symptoms, your foot or ankle has become stiff, swollen and more painful. You’ve followed the advice you got, and it hasn’t worked. In fact, you’re in worse shape now than when it all started.
Just do the right things, which is easier said than done. They will really help. If you don’t then you had better get used to that foot or ankle pain as they are here to stay. Just because you think you are ‘getting older’ it doesn’t mean that pain is ‘inevitable’. The pain you are feeling might have slowed you down and stopped you from doing the activities that you love, such as sport, doing the garden, looking after children or doing DIY. Don’t let it. Take back control!
If you have a foot or ankle injury and are in pain, then you don’t know what or who to believe about what is best for you. The information that you have found on the internet is contradictory and family and friends all have an opinion on what you should do. Very rarely are they medically trained, so despite meaning well, their advice will not help you at all. You are conflicted, you don’t know what to do, so you do NOTHING. Foot and ankle injuries can sometimes be caused by an impact or a sudden injury, but more often than not, they are the RESULT of poor care (not looking after them properly) and the EFFECT of this over time.

If you avoid doing the movements that hurt your ankle or foot and rest them completely, you will only add to the pain, soreness and stiffness longer-term. And that’s the opposite of what you want to achieve!
Rest is good, but you need to know how to rest and when to rest. Otherwise, you won’t recover. You need to keep your painful areas active, and who better to oversee this than your friendly Relive Physiotherapist?
Exercises are such a vital part of a recovery plan, but they are often underestimated. Our Physiotherapists understand your condition and how it affects you, which is why they will only give you exercises that will help and support your recovery. They will always be simple to do and your Relive Physiotherapist can show you how to do them and then make sure that you are doing them right.
If you try to take your exercises from the internet (there are thousands there), then you are probably going to be in the 90% of people who are disappointed. Unfortunately, most of the exercises you find will find will not be appropriate for your injury. In fact, they may even make your condition worse and increase your pain. You’ll become sceptical about exercises and how effective they can be, and this will be an extra thing that might slow down your recovery when we suggest them! Exercises are so important, but should be recommended to you by a trained professional, as not all foot or ankle injuries are the same.
There is a tendency among some Clinics to treat people exclusively using exercises, machines or even remotely. Whilst the first 2 are important in any balanced treatment plan and the third is good for working people, nothing beats the effect of ‘hands-on’ treatment. At Relive Physiotherapy, we do this as standard for every patient, every time. We believe that you DESERVE the best and this is often the quickest route to recovery. It delivers lasting results for YOUR injury. If you are struggling to do sport, walk or even just do daily routine exercises because of a bad foot or ankle, then TODAY is the first day of your recovery. Call Relive Physiotherapy and we can make it happen!
