You don’t have to be a professional Sports Person to get a Sports Injury. In fact, the vast majority of the people who come to see us looking for answers are not elite athletes. They are people who enjoy doing their sport and use it as a way of keeping fit, socialising or just remaining active. It’s why the consequences of an injury can feel so devastating.
You may be tempted to rest, or just ignore your injury, hoping that it will go away. But, that is the worst thing that you could do. If you continue training, or playing whilst injured, you are probably making the injury worse, meaning that when you are eventually forced to stop because the pain is too bad, your recovery will be significantly longer.
You will start to lose confidence in your body, leading you to be hesitant when doing your sport, which means that you will perform worse, or possibly injuring yourself in multiple places.
Going to see the GP won’t help you either. They are not trained in Musculoskeletal Injuries and will do one of 2 things. They will either give you some painkillers and tell you to rest, or refer you to an NHS Physiotherapist, but they are overwhelmed and the waiting lists are long.
Your injury might even spill over into your personal or professional life, meaning that some of the everyday home or work tasks might become challenging due to the pain.
A trip to see your friendly Relive Physiotherapist will put you firmly on the road to recovery.
When you play sport or do any kind of physical activities, you are often pushing your body to the limit of what it can handle, which can lead to injury, fatigue, poor performance and extended recovery times. Fortunately, Relive Physiotherapy is here to get you back in the game and support you through every step of your recovery.
1. Understanding WHY : Our skilled Sports Injury Physiotherapists will give you a thorough examination to understand why you have injured yourself in the way that you have. They will ask you questions about you, your injury and any relevant medical history. They will look at your body structure and identify any factors that have led to you being injured.
2. Body Structure Assessment – we will look at your anatomy and thoroughly examine the areas that have been affected, such as tendons, joints, ligaments or muscles to pinpoint any imbalance or faults.
3. Posture Correction – many strains or injuries can be caused by a poor posture. We will identify any poor posture and give you guidance on how to improve it.
4. Holistic Treatment – we will use a mixture of the most modern techniques and technology along with our skilled Hands-On Manual Therapy, Shockwave Therapy, Ultrasound, Acupuncture, Exercises and Strengthening to ensure that you have all the tools necessary to support your recovery.
5. Injury Prevention – we will work with you to strengthen and condition the areas where you have been injured, so that you won’t get injured again. By dealing with the root cause, we have the best chance of getting you better.
6. Working Together – we will involve you in your recovery at every step, crafting a plan that works for you, taking into account your time constraints and ability. We will explain to you the different steps that we are taking and how you will be feeling along the way. Whilst you might feel better after a few sessions, it means that you have just started the recovery process and we will explain to you what will happen once you are starting to feel a bit better.
When you come for your appointment, the first thing that you will get is a warm greeting from our friendly and professional Admin Team. They will offer you a drink and a biscuit and take some details from you to make sure that the Physiotherapist has all of the information that they need.
When you go with the Physiotherapist, they will have a chat to you about your injury, and then examine the damaged area to give you a diagnosis and talk to you about the treatment plan that they will be building, just for you. Your treatment plan will be tailored around the things that you can and can’t do, both in terms of your injury and then the time constraints.
They will talk to you about the recovery, which comes in 3 stages
Of course, this is just indicative, and depending on your injury and the way that you respond to treatment, this could be significantly longer. However, your Physiotherapist will give you a much better idea when they see you.
You might be tempted to ‘go it alone’ with exercises or videos that you can find on the internet, or with a personal trainer who ‘knows what they are doing’. If you follow this route, then you are more likely to reinjure yourself at any of the stages (and sometimes more seriously), as the exercises may not be the appropriate ones for the particular type of injury that you have had and will not be tailored for you by somebody who is very familiar with your injury. Of course, it is completely up to you, but please be aware of the risks.
It is also why some people may say that Physio didn’t work for them. In order for the Physiotherapy to be the most effective, you need to stay your course of treatment. Dropping out is almost a guarantee that you won’t get the long-term results that you are looking for!
